The Department of Electronic Engineering is a new type of Nanjing University’s engineering department established by following the concept of combining science and engineering.” It is one of the main bases for the university to conduct research and talent training in areas of electronic information science and engineering technology.
History
The department dates back to the early 1950s, when Nanjing University created under the first-level science discipline of Physics a sub-discipline Radio Physics, which was approved to grant doctoral degrees in 1981 and labeled a National Key Discipline in 2002. In 2003, aimed at meeting the urgent needs for talents by the rapidly developing electronic and information engineering technology and the needs of its own disciplinary development, the university created another sub-discipline Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology under the first-level engineering discipline of Electronic Science and Technology, which was also approved to grant doctoral degrees. In 2010, The Department of Electronic Engineering was established mainly based on the two secondary disciplines of Radio Physics and Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology.
In the practice over the past 50 years, we have produced a lot of advanced talents engaged in electronic information science and technology, and we have undertaken a large number of major science and technology projects that generated considerable social and economic benefits, including projects entrusted by the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Natural Science Foundation, and many provincial- and ministerial-level research projects and many Research &Development projects of horizontal cooperation.
Current situation
The department has two secondary-level disciplines, Radio Physics and Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology, with the former being a national key discipline. By offering disciplines across the first-level disciplines of Physics and Electronic Science and Technology, the department is indeed a multidisciplinary science & engineering department.
Our department features a highly-qualified faculty, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, “Changjiang Scholar” Distinguished Professors and Chair Professors and “New Century Excellent Talents” nominated by the State Ministry of Education, who are now leading their respective disciplines.
In talents cultivation, the department has formed a complete system going from undergraduate, masters, Ph.D. and postdoctoral research programs. In such cultivation, it attaches importance to basic education but follows a broad-caliber training model and make good use of high-level teaching laboratories. With the support of the World Bank loans, 211 Project and 985 Project, the department has built an internationally advanced basic education experiment center, which provides students with a first-class training environment for basic experiments. Graduates from this department have a solid theoretical foundation, strong hands-on ability and innovation ability, and they are hot on the job market and win praises from their employers.
In research, the department uses the basic theoretical methods of electronics and physics and modern experimental techniques as tools to explore new electronic materials, study the basic laws of physical processes and electromagnetic phenomena, develop new electronic devices and systems accordingly and apply them to practice. At present, the department has a superconducting electronics research institute and a microwave technology laboratory and other major research institutions. The superconducting electronics research institute is mainly engaged in the application of superconducting electronic devices in the terahertz band or quantum information technology. Its work is internationally renowned. The microwave technology laboratory has also made an important contribution to China's national economy and the modernization of national defense. It is not only engaged in the theoretical analysis, design and application of new artificial electromagnetic materials, but also carries out the comprehensive research on practical electromagnetic wave absorption materials. Recently, on the basis of the university key laboratory of superconducting electronics research institute, the department and its partners founded Jiangsu Province“Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Wave Control Technique.”
Goals of development
We will adhere to the principle of taking the discipline construction as the leader and the team construction as the core, further strengthen the strong points, give full play to the distinguished characteristics and improve the inner ability. By striving to development the new points of growth in the disciplines and constantly improving the level of education, we are determined to make our department into a high-level electronic and information science and technology personnel training and research base with higher international influence.
