Technical Seminar
Briefing R&D cum Antenna R&D&C in I2R
Dr Zhi Ning CHEN
RF & Optical Department
Institute for Infocomm Research
Chairperson: Prof. Yijun Feng
About Talk: Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore is a National R&D body which covers R&D ranging from Computer Science, Media, and Communications. Antenna group in I2R has been very active in R&D of antenna miniaturization technologies for wireless systems since 2002. In this talk, the structure and management of R&D in I2R will be briefly introduced. The main R&D activities in RF and Optical Department of I2R will be studied as an example. After that, the R&D&C activities in I2R will be elaborated. Last a interaction between the speaker and attendees will be scheduled.
About Speaker: Dr. Chen received his BEng, MEng, PhD and DoE degrees all in Electrical Engineering from China and Japan. During 1988-1995, he worked as Lecturer and Associate Professor in Institute of Communications Engineering, China. Later he conducted his research in Southeast University, City University of Hong Kong, and University of Tsukuba, Japan (JSPS) as Associate Professor, Research Fellow, and Post-doctoral Fellow. In 2001 and 2004, he visited University of Tsukuba under JSPS Fellowship Program (senior level). In 2004, he worked at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, USA as Academic Visitor. Since 1999, he has worked at Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R). His current appointments are Principal Scientist and Department Head for RF & Optical. He is concurrently holding Adjunct Professorships at Southeast University, Nanjing University, National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also Guest Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Dr Chen is very active in many international technical events by playing multiple roles as general chairs or key members of organizing committees. He established International Workshop on Antenna Technology (iWAT) in 2005. Now iWAT has become one of the most important international antenna events.
Dr Chen has published more than 220 papers in journals and presented at conferences. He has authored and edited books entitled “Broadband Planar Antennas”, “UWB Wireless Communication” and “Antennas for Portable Devices” all published by John Wiley & Sons. He also contributed chapters to the books of UWB Antennas and Propagation for Communications, Radar, and Imaging (August 2006) as well as Antenna Engineering Handbook (June 2007). He is holding 19 granted and filed patents and has licensed antenna designs to industry. His current research interest includes applied electromagnetics, antennas for UWB, MIMO, WLAN, WiFi, WiMAX, WBAN, and bio-imaging systems.
He is IEEE Fellow. (www1.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/~chenzn)
